MFS105 Unit

Media Fashion Styling Programme
Unit Brief MFS105

Introduction to unit

Welcome to the sublime, ridiculous and totally bonkers world of London ClubCulture, where freaky fashion, and a fierce musical mix and carefree flamboyance are spliced together. For your first unit in make-up and hair design we want to give you inspiration to rev up your creativity and be as extreme and colourful as your heart desires. The 1980s club styles are an important reference for many make-up artists and hair stylists working in fashion and pop video shoots today and we hope you’ll be equally inspired to embrace a truly expressive approach to make-up and hair design.

Unit description

This unit is designed to introduce the essential skills and techniques for hair styling and make-up applications and related disciplines, including health and hygiene. Students will also be introduced to the creative processes involved in the formation of visual outcomes and how to apply these skills appropriate to lens based media styling. Students will look at the diverse roles of the artist ranging from producing period looks for film to creating themed characters for music promos. Students will learn about the components, in particular character and fantasy that are key to producing successful and effective styling solutions.

ASSESSMENT 100% Portfolio: Illustrated Report and Sketchbook

Assessment Task and Criteria

You will research and develop two looks, which represent alternative London ClubCulture for the concept of a pop video.  However historically clubbers have happily mashed up Beyond Retro vintage or charity shop finds with designer – perhaps a little House of Holland, Dior or Giles (Deacon). They thrive on breaking all the sartorial rules: marrying wigs, hats, animal masks and oversized plastic glasses with their own bare flesh and freakish make-up.  For this project there is no official dress code but you must adhere to the motto‘ If you want to get in, you have to make a little effort.’ In other words, the clubbers like to dress up. Big time.  And your concept for the promotional video has to represent this.

Consider sculptural shapes, abstract patterns, alien skin textures and metallic colours. Look at science fiction films and fashion for inspiration. Research past and present music acts and pop icons that have created on-stage identities for themselves referencing music subcultures.

You will concept, style, and photograph two of the styled images, which will represent the signature alternative clubber look.

Create 1 mood board as a summary of your interpretation of club culture. You will need to continue to develop your design ideas and the imagery for your models as well as the written text that supports your visual research.  Use these ideas to create 2 style boards that reflect the contemporary inspiration for your 2 models with London Club Culture references. Use tear sheets – include possible settings.

You will concept, style, and photograph two styled images, which will represent the signature alternative clubber look. Photograph your models – 1 head shot and 1 mid shot or 1 full body for each model.

You will need to upload all of your images as a single PDF file. (If you don’t have Adobe Acrobat go to print and change to 'PDF'.)

Submission checklist:

  • Sketchbook including 10 pages of visual research, several work-in-progress make-up ideas in the form of design templates; several work in progress styled examples. Evidence of design deliberation (e.g. test shots) must be included.   Also show evidence of clothes and make up used to style model.
  • 1 mood board showing background research and visual reference points, and a suggestion of the backdrop you will be shooting against.
  • 2 style boards, one for each model.  This should include an indication of clothes styling preferences and a design for the make up and hair
  • 2 pages with photographic prints of the end results, 2 pages for each model.
  • Bibliography

SUBMIT ALL PAGES  AS ONE SINGLE PDF FILE SAVED AT SURNAME/MFS105.PDF
